What I Wish I Had Known About Fruit

I used to hate fruit. The only kind of fruit I would eat is a banana, and that is if you were lucky. I never ate apples, berries, peaches, pears- nada. So sad….

Now, I still am not the biggest adventurer when it comes to different kinds of fruits. I know what I like and what I dont. I loooove apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, pears and of course, bananas.

However, not all fruits are created equal. Let me explain…

Tropical fruits such as bananas, mangos, pineapple, grapes, watermelon, coconut, these are all high in natural fructose and carbohydrates. They have a higher Glycemic Load (the sugar content raises blood sugar, then drops it quickly- think candy bar) than more dense fruits such as apples, peaches, pears, pomegranates, grapefruit (think about how heavy those are!!).

This is important because, if you are tying to slim down and lose weight, these fruits can actually inhibit your body’s ability to burn fat! No good! The widely accepted ratio for vegetables to fruits for fat loss is 5:1. That’s right, five veggies for every 1 fruit. That’s how potent fruit can be! Picking your produce wisely can make a big difference in the goals you are trying to achieve.

So, breaking it down: (Ps, click on a fruit to view the nutritional analysis from nutritiondata.com)

Good fruit:

Bananas

Mangos

Pineapple

Grapes

Watermelon

Coconut

Better Fruit:

Apples

– Berries! (Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)

Peaches

Pears

Apricots

Grapefruit

To sum up, all fruit is good, but some fruits are better than others. The old adage is true, an apple a day can keep the doctor away!!

Bonus: Did you know that tomatoes and avocados are also fruits?!

Happy Munching!
